Little India – “Mumbai” in Singapore
Grand C Hotel is smack in the middle of the district Little India with sights and smells that are comparable to Mumbai but only much cleaner.
Wandering on lanes like Dunlop Street, Hindoo Road, Campbell Lane, Desker Road, Veerasamy Road and Kapor Road, visitors will find many aged two-storey shop houses hawking merchandise like; saris, gold jewellery, henna dyes, fresh flower garlands, spices, incense, bespoke Arabic perfumes, Ayurvedic spas and of course, delicious North and South Indian food.
It’s easy to get pulled in by the very feel of Little India with the sounds and smells of India and the Indian folks going about their daily lives with the sounds of Bollywood never far away.
The primary attraction to visitors is the iconic shop houses that are protected and beautifully restored. Each two storey building is painted in reds, pinks, purples, greens and blues with colored shutters covering the top floor windows.
Late Night Shopping for Insomniacs
Unofficially the best shopping mall in Singapore, such a claim can only excite “the shopper” in you. The 24-hour operated Mustafa Shopping Center is stocked to the brim with bargains and should make the top of your list of things to do when in Little India.
Mustafa Center isn’t the flashest in Singapore, far from it, but what it lacks in glam it makes up for in price; clothes, perfumes, cosmetics, gold jewellery, sports goods like tennis and badminton racquets, laptops, digital cameras, camcorders, multi-function printers, speakers, headphones, LCD TVs, mobile phones and Apple products are all available at competitive prices.
As well as every kind of shopping you can imagine, Mustafa provides all the amenities that you would expect; including foreign currency exchange available at in-house money changers, VISA processing and travel bookings.
Strange Mix of Hindu Temples and Mosques
Singapore is a well-known to be a multi-racial city and hence in Little India, one can find the odd mix of Muslim mosque in the predominantly Indian community.
One of the oldest and more famous Hindu temples is the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple at 141 Serangoon Road. The temple is erected by Indian pioneers who came to Singapore to work and is dedicated to Kali, the ferocious Hindu Goddess of Power.
The multi-tiered gopuram (tower) above Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple’s entrance, a staple of South Indian architecture is stuffed with numerous intricately carved and colorful sculptures of Indian deities and mythical creatures. It is definitely an object of desire for photography buffs.
Abdul Gafoor Mosque is a national monument of Singapore located at 41 Dunlop Street. The mosque maybe small but it is definitely unmistakable with many elaborate minarets juxtaposed against the sunny blue sky of Singapore.
Another unique feature of Abdul Gafoor Mosque is its entrance that is decorated with an elaborate sundial made of 25 sunburst rays inscribed with names of 25 prophets in Arabic calligraphy. It is probably one of its kind in the world and again, this definitely warrant a few snaps from your camera.
