Big Hotel Singapore – Review
“Big”-hearted comforts in the heart of the city!
As a flash-packer, I always find it challenging to manage my budget in Singapore. The trick, I’ve realized, is to pay a few dollars extra and stay in the heart of city, so I don’t give in to the temptation of taking cabs or eating at expensive restaurants for lack of an alternative.
BIG Hotel, though slightly more expensive than other budget hotels from just $89 a night, turned out to be a big money saver, and one sprinkled with style!
Alighting at Bugis MRT train station after a direct 30-minute MRT ride from Changi Airport, I walked the short five minutes to Big Hotel on Middle Road with my backpack.
At my doorstep lay the malls of Bugis Junction and Bugis+, the street shopping paradise aka Bugis Street, and a variety of restaurants and cafes to appease all budgets; City Hall, Orchard Road and Little India were a short walk or train ride away.
At the hotel itself, a swanky lobby greeted me, complete with a relaxing lounge and a quirky cafe area. What won me over though, was that besides free WiFi, the hotel offers a complimentary Google Nexus tablet for use during the stay!
The rooms at Big Hotel are fairly compact, but chic even at first glance. The stylish décor packs in everything you could need, and leaves you marvelling at the use of space. If you are like me who prefer to stay in the middle of the action, yet come home to a room with character, Big Hotel is your budget hotel of choice.
The Rooms and Hotel Amenities
Like the name suggests, Big Hotel creates the impression of space right from the moment you enter the lobby.
My Executive Room, with its textured walls, elevated wooden bed frame fitted with a cushy mattress, a writing desk ready to plug in the latest gadgets (including the Google Nexus offered rental-free usage by the hotel), and a horizontally stretched bathroom with a rainforest shower, felt “big” to live in, even in a compact space.
The lighting in the room, with a suspended writing lamp, is conducive to work, surf, curl in and watch television, or sleep long hours without realizing it. The “Big”-branded toiletries in the bathroom are made from natural ingredients and aromatic, while a hair dryer, electric kettle, safe deposit box, and varieties of tea ensure a comfortable stay.
All rooms include standard amenities like:
- Flat-screen TV with Unlimited Movies-on-Demand
- Tea and Coffee Maker
- Rainforest Shower
- Safe Deposit Box
- Hair Dryer
- Complimentary Toiletries
Hotel facilities include:
- 24-hr Reception
- Luggage Storage
- Laundry/Dry Clean
After a fortnight of traipsing along the countryside in the Philippines, Big Hotel offered me a refreshing welcome back into the modern world. A breezy check-in ensured I could curl up in my plush room without wasting precious minutes. The staff was courteous and patient with my questions about the area.
After my 2 nights stay, I was flying back to India on an evening flight. The hotel allowed me a late checkout until 2:00 pm (they didn’t charge me for it), after which I could lounge around in the lobby, continuing to use the hotel’s superfast WiFi, until it was time to leave. If only I didn’t have to leave!
As someone who earns her living on the go, a stable and fast WiFi connection is as important as a good breakfast to start the day!
The complimentary WiFi at Big Hotel worked without a glitch, let me connect to 4 devices (plus the Google Nexus) simultaneously, and worked at satisfying high speeds in every part of the hotel.
Food, Attractions, Shopping
Big Hotel’s location in the heart of Singapore deserves five stars! I ate breakfast at Bugis Junction, bought quirky knick-knacks to carry home at Bugis Street, caught a movie at the snazzy Bugis+ shopping mall, took the train to Orchard Road for some shopping indulgence, walked to Arab Street for a shisha at night, and was spoilt for choice at Singapore’s newest eateries on a budget – all in one day!
Bugis alone can keep a foodie and shopaholic occupied for days. The Bugis MRT train station connects you within 15 minutes travel time to all of Singapore’s major attractions, including the shopping extravaganza that is Orchard Road, the Central Business District, and Singapore’s newest attraction, the Gardens by the Bay.
The toughest part for me was deciding where to eat, shop and make merry during my limited time in the city!
Convenience (nearest MRT)
Big Hotel offers a most convenient location on Middle Road, a 5-minute walk to Bugis MRT (EW12/DT14), which connected me directly to Changi Airport in under 40 minutes. A slightly longer walk away is the Bras Basah MRT station (CC2), which connects you to Orchard Road in under 10 minutes.
Leisurely walks of 15-20 minutes took me to the cultural districts of Little India and Kampong Glam, to get my fill of Indian curries and the bohemian Arab Street ambience. I also found my electronics fix at Sim Lim Square (a huge IT mall) a short walk away.
I can’t think of a better area to stay in Singapore, and a place that is so indulgent of creature comforts.
