24-Hr Shopping Mecca with Many Bargains
The 24-Hour Mustafa Shopping Center at 145 Syed Alwi Road is always touted but unofficially to be the best of shopping center and it certainly does not disappoint those visiting for the first time. Mustafa Center is a 4-level mega mall that is jam packed with more than 15,000 globe-trotting visitors during weekends and is certainly a great place to do people watching.
Each level has a dizzying array of “never ending” shelves stocked to the brim with goods that are priced competitively, easily 5%-15% cheaper than normal shops. If you are wondering whether the goods here genuine, rest assured that they are real and they are cheaper because Mustafa is doing volume business selling which means lower markups.
You can find bargains like clothing, toys, perfumes, cosmetics, toiletries, health supplements, gold jewelry, digital cameras, camcorders, laptops, printers, fax machines, mobile phones, iPhones, iPads, Apple accessories, coffee machines, LCD TVs and even luxury Swiss watches like Tag Heuer and Tissot.
First Eco-Friendly Mall in Singapore
If you are a die-hard green person and wish to do your part for Earth, you can shop without guilt in City Square Mall, Singapore’s first eco-mall. Located at junction of Serangoon and Kitchener Roads (rear of Mustafa Center), City Square mall entrance has a 49,000 square feet green park made of recycled tiles and eco-wood to welcome visitor.
Kids will definitely be enchanted with the green park and adults can bask in air-conditioned comfort that is cooled by super energy saving air conditioners. Shopping cannot be compared to the 24-hour Mustafa but City Square Mall has loads of restaurants and eateries catering to any taste palettes.
Singapore’s Transport System – Past and Present
The Land Transport Authority of Singapore has a Land Transport Gallery that traces the history of Singapore transport modes and network. Reaching this gallery is very convenient as it is just 5-minute walk from “Exit B” of Little India MRT Station (NE7).
LTA’s Land Transport Gallery is great for kids and adults that enjoy learning in an interactive way that includes movie theater, simulated train station and multimedia stations.
The gallery contains all things transport related from Singapore’s early mode of transport to the new mega underground rail projects. You’re guaranteed to learn loads about Singapore and transport technology, but not on a Monday as the LTA Transport Gallery is closed.
The Tekka Market – Heartbeat of Little India
Guests staying in Little India district cannot miss taking a walk in Tekka Market and Food Center on Buffalo Road which is the communal heartbeat for the Indian population of Singapore.
The Tekka Market is a two storey boxy looking building juxtaposed against the rows of Pre-War shop houses which makes it unmistakable to the first time visitors. It is also easily accessible from “Exit C” of Little India MRT Station (NE7).
The wet market on the first floor sells almost every imaginable type of fresh and frozen meat and tropical fruits. There is also a large section where fish mongers de-scale and hawk the catch of the day to the throng of crowds looking for the freshest pompret or garoupa. Locals like the Tekka Market because they can find the rare hard-to-find Indian spices, exotic ingredients and freshly made curry paste here.
On the same floor is a sprawling food center with more than 50 stalls dishing out mouth watering Indian and Muslim food that are cheap and generous in portions. A good breakfast will be to chow down a few pieces of “Roti Prata” (Indian pancake) and wash it down with the smooth-as-silk “Teh Tarik” (pulled milk tea) that is honed to perfection in any of the drinks stall here.
The first sight to greet visitors when they take the stairs to the 2nd storey will be rows and rows of colorful and sequined Saris, Punjabi costumes and Lehengas on sale. Prices are affordable and quality is considerably good and if you like to be unique, bespoke Indian costumes can also be made for a slight premium.
