Explore the Singapore You Never Know About
Singapore is more known for being an ultra-modern city with iconic skyscrapers and swanky shopping centers at Orchard Road. What is less known are the wetlands, parks and the last surviving kampong of Singapore that definitely warrant some attention from travelers.
Pulau Ubin is probably the only surviving kampong (village) of Singapore and is actually a small island in Straits of Johor. It is reachable by a 15-minute boat ride on the “water-taxi” or a bumboat as it’s locally called, from the Changi Point Ferry Terminal. The best way to experience the old 60’s of Singapore on Pulau Ubin is on a rented bicycle from the rental shops near the jetty. Over here, visitors can catch the last glimpse of how early Singaporeans live and breathe during the 1960’s.
Chek Jawa is a unique 100-hectare wetland area located in the south-eastern part of the Pulau Ubin. It is probably the most famous destination on the island that you shouldn’t miss. Made of 7 ecosystems; the Sandy Shore, Sand Bar, Rocky Shore, Coral Rubble, Seagrass Lagoon, Mangroves, and Coastal Forest, visitors can have fun spotting rare insects, plants and migratory birds. Thoughtfully, a 20m viewing tower is also provided for birds watching and elevated views of Chek Jawa.
Changi Beach Park is one of Singapore’s oldest beach parks that simply ooze rustic charm. The pristine beach lined with neat coconut trees offers the perfect setting for visitors to truly enjoy the sun, sea and the sand. There is a multitude of activities that you can do here, ranging from water sports, sun bathing, camping, cycling, fishing, etc. There are also some delicious food outlets nearby, including Bistro@Changi where you can get a splendid sea-view to go with your fish and chips and beer.
