Indulge in Hindu Temples, Rituals and Sights

On the same road as Fortuna Hotel are two of Singapore’s oldest and famous Hindu temples, the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple and Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple.

Exploring these two temples may take up your whole morning because there are many traditional rituals performed by devotees within the temples that are a sight to behold. Also the temple buildings are covered with intricately carved sculptures of Hindu gods and deities that warrant a few good shots from your camera.

One must also not forget the gopurams, a tapered roof structure that is a multi-tiered layer of colorful and mini-sized Hindu gods and creatures stacked on top of each other, sometimes reaching height of more than 60 feet. They can be found above both temple entrances and again camera buffs like to shoot them in a juxtaposed fashion against the deep blue sky.

For the uninformed, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Preserver of the Universe) while Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is dedicated Hindu Goddess of Kali of Time and Change.

Stepping Back in Time

One of the best ways to enjoy your stay in Little India district is to take advantage of a cooler afternoon to just wander around the labyrinth of lanes on both sides of the Serangoon main road.

One of the must see street is the Campbell Lane where you can find many flower garlands weavers manning their quaint little stalls. The multi-hued flowers and brightly-colored vegetables from the odd vegetable seller seemingly transform the old street into an alley of kaleidoscopic delight.

The other street to visit is the Dunlop Street, next to Campbell lane, a one way road lined with mostly two-storey aged shop houses. An area well-liked by backpackers, Dunlop Street somehow exudes a bohemian vibe that just lures any passers-by in. One must see is the magnificent Abdul Gafoor Mosque with an unusual architecture mix of Saracenic and Roman themes at the end of the street.

Tapas and Sundowner in Little India

Imagine a place to wind down for the evening with a glass of Sangria in hand while overlooking at the whole of Little India basking in orange sunset rays. The bohemian-feel Dunlop Street has such a place.

The Zsofi Tapas Bar tucked away inconspicuously on 68 Dunloop Street is a secret place that locals just want to keep for themselves. The Spanish bar serves authentic tapas and paella that is surprisingly affordable and delicious. Ask for a roof-top terrace table and you will be rewarded with a nice evening view of Little India.

The Mustafa Centre – 24 Hour Shopping Excitement

The word Mustafa creates excitement in most visitors and rightfully so it’s declared the best shopping center in Singapore, attracting 15,000 visitors at weekends. Mustafa Center is the most appropriate place to head for on a sleepless night as it is open 24-hour a day, every day of the year.

Other malls in Singapore have been modernized with bright flashing lights and facades, but Mustafa has not gone down this route and looks unimpressive compared to them. What it may lack in modern frivolity it makes up for with bargains everywhere; clothing, toys, gold jewellery, health supplements, perfumes, cosmetics, sports goods, shoes, digital cameras, camcorders, printers, laptops, mobile phones, iPhones ad iPads accessories and Swiss watches like Tag Heuer and Tissot.

The 24-hour Mustafa Center also provides all the amenities that you will have come to expect; money changers, assistance with VISA processing and outbound travel bookings services.

The Mustafa shouldn’t be missed.
