Old Malay Village with Chic Charm
Directly behind the Hotel 81 Heritage, you will find the Arab Quarters, an area lined with neat rows of beautifully restored conservation shop houses that are relics of the Arab Kampong during the early Sir Stamford Raffles days. Street names like Bussorah, Muscat and Baghdad were named after Arab cities.
Today, the restored double-storey shop houses are occupied by a quirky mix of cafes, local fashion designers boutiques, curio shops, fabric and rattan stores, oriental carpet sellers and Turkish tea houses. As such, Arab Quarters is best explored on foot and having fun weaving in and out of the shaded walkways, dropping into any shop that interests you.
A stone throw from the backdoor of Hotel 81 Heritage is the Malay Heritage Center that showcase the rich history of the Singapore’s Malay past. A few steps away, one can also find Singapore’s largest mosque, the Sultan Mosque. It is easily recognizable with a large golden dome that is definitely Taj-Mahal influenced.
Haven for Fishing Enthusiasts
Along the stretch of Arab Quarter’s shop houses facing Beach Road, one can find a group of specialist shops selling fishing accessories like rods, reels and lures. Almost all the local fishing lovers will come here to get the latest fishing equipment or just to meet up with the fishing community.
Army Market for Cheap Camping Gear
Crossing the Jalan Sultan road in front of Hotel 81 Heritage, and walking along Beach Road until you pass Kampong Glam Community Centre, one will find a two-storey complex. On the 2nd floor, you can find more than a dozen stores selling cheap camping and outdoor gear. Many local army boys will descend onto here during weekends to get their rifle cleaning kits and other army supplies, hence the moniker Army Market.
Karaoke with Beautiful Hostesses
Facing Hotel 81 Heritage are two nondescript office buildings, the Textile Center and Sultan Plaza. Tucked away in these buildings are karaoke lounges that employ beautiful hostesses. Standard practice will be to order a few bottles of whiskey so the room comes free and if you pay tips, the hostesses will sing with you. Foreign visitors are advised to check with the PR managers manning the karaoke lounges for house rules and charges to avoid any nasty surprises.
Wonderful Shopping & Food Awaits You
Sim Lim Square, which is the place well-known by seasoned travelers to Singapore for cheap electronics is a 15-minute stroll away. Over here, one can find and bargain over the latest digital cameras, laptops, computer parts, game consoles, LCD displays and media players.
For the ladies, the Bugis Junction and Bugis+ (formerly known as Iluma) shopping malls are a mere 10-minute walk through the Arab Quarters. You can find international brands like Uniqlo, Aeropostale, Bershka, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Levis and Dorothy Perkins.
