Singapore’s Oldest and Hippest Hood

Hotel 81 Osaka Facade
Tiong Bahru Estate was known as Mei Ren Wo (Den of Beauties in Chinese) back in the 1930s as it was the choice place for the rich and powerful to hide their mistresses. But since the early 2000s, it has become a hip place for artsy folks to hangout due to the influx of lifestyle-inspired businesses setting shop here.

This quaint little estate consists of 30 low-rise blocks of white-washed Art-Deco and Straits Settlement style of mostly 3-storey walk-up apartments. The architecture is uniquely distinctive with rounded roofs and corners, spiral staircases and narrow entrances. Come to think of it, the spiral staircases sure come in handy for naughty husbands to escape when the wife comes kicking down the front door.

First-time visitors should probably spend the morning to explore the labyrinth of main streets and back lanes of Seng Poh Road, Eng Hoon Street, Guan Chuan Street and Chay Yan Street. You will find a good mix of indie bookstores, specialty coffee joints, modern bistros, French bakeries, quirky lifestyle stores and even a high-end patisserie selling luxe fare like macarons and éclairs.

There is even a rare temple dedicating to Sun Wukong, the legendary Monkey God as depicted in the great classical novel Journey to the West. The 74-year old Qi Tian Gong Temple occupies the oldest building in Tiong Bahru Estate and is located on 44 Eng Hoon Street, just steps away from Hotel 81 Osaka.

Oh Food! Glorious Food!

Besides coming here to soak into the bohemian vibes and discover what this historic gem can offer, another big attraction of Tiong Bahru is the famous local food dished out by surviving first-generation hawkers.

The Tiong Bahru Market and Food Center is an unmistakable 2-storey complex with a rounded front entrance that is so Art-Deco-style. Just head to 2nd floor where you can find 100 over stalls specializing in predominantly local Chinese and Cantonese-style food.

Some of the must-try here are:

  1. Fluffy melt-in-mouth meat buns from Tiong Bahru Pau stall (#02-18)
  2. Tasty pig’s organ broth from Koh Brother Pig’s Organ Soup stall (#02-29)
  3. Fragrant chicken rice from Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice
    stall (#02-82)
  4. Steamed rice cakes from Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Chwee Kueh stall (#02-05)
  5. Roast pork and duck from Tiong Bahru Lee Hong Kee Cantonese Roasted stall
    (#02-60)

For those looking to have a taste of Bak Kut Teh or peppery pork-bone soup, look no further than the old institution, the Old Tiong Bahru Bak Kut Teh housed in a coffee-shop at Block 58 Seng Poh Road. There is another old gem, the Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice stall that has been dishing out delicious curry rice with pork chop since 1946 at Block 57 on Eng Hoon Street.

Foreign visitors will be glad to know the food found in Tiong Bahru is generally cheap and they come in generous portions too.

Sundowner in Charming Tiong Bahru

Come evening, the perfect way to wind down the day will be to have a glass of Singapore Sling (signature cocktail dating back to 1915), enjoy the cool breeze while taking in a bird’s eye view of the surrounding Art-Deco flats.

The Halo rooftop bar located on roof of Wangz Hotel, an impossible to miss military-style building with a curved metallic facade will be the best place to catch a nice sunset in Tiong Bahru.

The Wangz Hotel located on 231 Outram Road is probably one of the tallest commercial buildings in old Tiong Bahru estate. As such the Halo sky-bar offers a spectacular view of surrounding buildings and city skyline.
