Hotel 81 Tristar
Hotel 81 Tristar belongs to one of the rare few budget hotels in Singapore that sits just outside of the famous Geylang area, famous for late-night food and red light activities.
Walking 10-minute from the hotel, guests can take advantage of the nearby Paya Lebar Interchange MRT Station (CC9/EW8) to travel to most parts of Singapore by trains. Changi Airport is also a short 25-minute train ride (7 stops) to the Paya Lebar MRT station – real convenient for hotel guests.
Besides being near to Geylang, Hotel 81 Tristar is also straddled by Joo Chiat, a Peranakan enclave. On the side of Joo Chiat, guests can find many quaint old shop houses and terrace houses that are infused with strong Peranakan flavors which will delight photography buffs of vintage buildings. Near the hotel are also many eateries serving Malay and Vietnamese food.
Late Night Dining and Adventure in Geylang
If you intend to try the famous Singapore’s Chilli and Pepper Crab dishes you’ve heard so much about, look no further than the No Signboard Seafood located at 414 Geylang Road. Open daily till 1am, No Signboard is legendary for the finger licking good chilli crab and white pepper crab as well as the butter crab and steamed garlic bamboo clam. The atmosphere is very relaxed but also lively, and the prices are reasonable but do not expect Michelin-star restaurant service. The aroma and flavor are bound to make you come back for more.
For the hot-blooded males looking for some raunchy action or even ladies who just want to see what is Singapore’s famous red light district all about, Geylang is safe enough to do that. Singapore’s strict law enforcement has made walking around Geylang safe even for female travelers although you may be given stares or propositioned at times but nothing nefarious more than that.
Just head for the even-numbered streets or Lorongs (6, 8, 10, 12, and 14) as it is known locally – you will see a lot of working girls standing by the road accepting “indecent proposals”. Just remember not to take any photos to respect their privacy and most of the time they also protected by their minders.
After the titillating adventure, you can drop by any of the coffee shops that are still open for business. In fact, Geylang almost never sleeps as you can still get local snacks like fried dough fritters with soya milk, beef noodles and frog legs porridge even at like 5am!
Unique Shopping Experience in Joo Chiat
Joo Chiat Complex is just around the corner from Hotel 81 Tristar, and it has a myriad of shops specializing in Malay textiles to traditional Peranakan costumes like the Kebayas worn by Singapore Airlines air stewardess. Stopping by is definitely a must if you are in the area, as you are bound to pick up some unique souvenirs. Also be ready to be amazed by the mind-boggling range of traditional herbal remedies like Tongkat Ali, also sometimes also known as “Asia Viagra” on sale here.
Geylang Serai Market is a two-storey complex comprising of a wet market and food center that is just across the road from Hotel 81 Tristar. It has been recently renovated, and it offers some of the best hawker food in the area. You can also buy fresh produce like meat, vegetable, or fruits at the wet market, but make sure to also visit the food stalls for some authentic Malay and Indian cuisine. You can get filled-up here with cheap and delicious rice dishes such as the Nasi Padang and Chicken Briyani.
