The Joo Chiat – Katong district is quite famous for its amazing local cuisine, and people from all over Singapore travel to this area for authentic Peranakan dishes. The area is now a melting pot of different cultures, so visitors will find an interesting blend of Peranakan, Malay, Chinese and Western cultures reflected in the cuisine, architecture, and local customs.
Embracing Peranakan Culture
Le Peranakan Hotel itself reflects ancient Peranakan culture in the amazing artwork, furniture, and artifacts that you will find inside. Within walking distance from the hotel, there are some of the last Peranakan heritage landmarks in the city, which should not be missed.
One of the best Peranakan landmarks in Joo Chiat, the Katong Antique House (No. 208) is just 10-minute by foot from the hotel. Owner and curator, Peter Wee, setup this mini-museum cum shop to preserve and showcase his Peranakan roots and heritage to the public. Visitors can find interesting heirlooms on display, such as various Peranakan antiques, jewellery, exquisite beadwork, wedding costumes, and other family treasures from Mr Wee’s collection, who is a fourth generation Baba Peranakan.
Rumah Bebe is the other Peranakan heritage home that strives to keep this ancient culture alive by displaying some amazing artifacts and works of art. Owner Bebe Seet is a Peranakan descendant, but also a great artist who displays and sells some of her work inside the heritage home. Over here you will not only see some amazing pieces of painstakingly handcrafted art, such as embroidered artwork, kebayas, beaded shoes and costumes, but you can also learn a great deal about the Peranakan culture.
To complete the Peranakan experience, one must definitely try the most famous Straits-Chinese dish, the Nyonya Laksa. Laksa is a traditional Peranakan noodle dish made from rich coconut gravy, garnished with lots of fresh prawns, cockles, bean sprouts and healthy dollop of sambal chilli. The noodles are served cut so it can be easily eaten with a spoon instead of chopsticks which can be a messy affair. The recommended stall to go for this local delight is the 328 Katong Laksa on 51 East Coast Road.
Dining and Relaxing by the Seaside in Singapore
Another advantage of staying at the budget Le Peranakan Hotel is its proximity to some of Singapore’s popular beaches, parks, and food haunts located in the south-east of Singapore. No matter if it is day or night, this part of Singapore is always very lively.
East Coast Park, a name synonymous with the word “beach” in Singapore is just 25-minute stroll from hotel’s doorstep. East Coast Park is a very popular beach with locals and tourist alike who want to enjoy the sunny weather and at the same time have some water fun in Singapore. Stretching over 15km, this beach is man-made with the whole park built on reclaimed land which is a mind-blowing feat that has to be seen with visitor’s real eyes.
East Coast Park has a wide range of facilities for all kinds of activities, such as a skating park, running trails, cycling tracks, barbecue pits, fishing jetty, water sports center, shower facilities, kite flying corner, food and beverage outlets and many others.
Long Beach Seafood Restaurant located on East Coast Parkway (along the beach stretch) is one of the must-go spot for the famous Singapore Chilli Crap dish. Visitors can tackle the spicy yet addictive jumbo crabs in air-conditioned comfort while enjoying the evening bustle of the park at the same time. Ambiance is definitely welcoming and relaxed and best of all, prices are openly displayed.
For cheap and good local food, the alfresco-style East Coast Lagoon Food Village (next to the lagoon) is a favorite of the locals. Mostly famous for barbequed food like Satay, Sambal Stingray, Chicken Wings, Sambal Squid, it is here that visitors can sample all under-one-roof. Remember to wash down the hearty meal with refreshing Tiger beer or the fresh sugar cane juice.
