Little India’s Attraction
Little India is just but one of the famous cultural hubs in Singapore, and boasts a number of iconic landmarks, North and South Indian cuisine and attracts tourists from all over the globe. The main attraction in Little India is the area itself, which is given the moniker “Cleaner Version of Mumbai”; are flourished with old shop houses, magnificent temples and tantalizing aromas of spices and curries.
Iconic Temples of Little India
Little India is infused with rich heritage and culture and what better way to appreciate exquisite architecture than with places of worship.
The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple located along Serangoon Road is a tribute to the Hindu goddess Kali and was built by Tamil Laborers as early as 1881. The tower or Gopuram perched above the entrance is packed with mini-statues of deities and mythical creatures all coated in eye-catching hues. The reason for this thoughtful placement of fine architecture is simply to allow worshipers to pray from a distance.
Another epic place of worship is the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road, beside the Farrer Park MRT station. This ancient temple was built in 1855 and now declared a national monument Singapore. Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple is dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu and a prominent landmark in Little India with its distinctive 5-tier blue-hued Gopuram stacked with mini-statues of gods and creatures.
Shopping in Little India
Well, there’s more than you can ask for in Little India starting with the Sim Lim Square. Commonly known as SLS by the locals, Sim Lim Square is a great place to get bargains on electronics wares like laptops, tablets, GPS devices, mobile phones, motherboards, hard-disks, printers, digital cameras and game consoles. This six level complex is just 5-minute by foot from the Madras Hotel @ Tekka.
Another great location for bargains on IT and electronics equipment and 10-minute walk from Hotel Madras @ Tekka is the Mustafa Shopping Center. Mustafa Center also happens to be the modern landmark in Little India and one of the flagship department stores in Singapore.
Opens for 24 hours a day, Mustafa Center is your one-stop place to get low prices on virtually everything like apparels, shoes, sports equipment, toys, digital cameras, mobile phones, iPhones and iPads accessories, health supplements, perfumes, cosmetics and even Indian gold jewelry.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Although there is an abundance of eateries with a 500m radius of Madras Hotel @ Tekka, one must visit the Tekka Center to experience local hawker food, which is an essential thing to do when in Singapore. To have not tried eating in a Singapore hawker center is like visiting Hong Kong without dining in their ubiquitous “cha chaan teng” (tea restaurants).
The Tekka Center located on Buffalo Road (right beside Little India MRT Station) serves as a great place to have all your 3 meals and on the cheap too. Head for the hawker center on ground floor where you can find neat rows of food stalls numbering more than 100. Although the stalls predominantly serve Indian and Muslim cuisine, there are some Chinese food gems that are waiting to be discovered as well.
Our recommendations include Mutton Briyani, a dish of fluffy spiced-up Basmati rice adorned with pieces succulent and tender mutton from Yakader Nasi Briyani stall (#01-259). If you are still famished after polishing off the plate of briyani, then head for the queer-named Sky Lab Cooked Food stall (unit 228). Ask for the Prawn Vadai, a popular Indian snack that is a fried fluffy doughnut filled with prawns and spices.
For Chinese food, you can’t go wrong with Braised Duck Rice from the legendary Heng Ji Goose and Duck Rice stall at unit 335. Prepared from decades old recipe, the braised duck pieces are tender and fragrant. The way to eat this dish is to drizzle some of the dark sauce onto the rice and eat together with a piece of duck meat dunked in the superb chili sauce provided.
By the way, remember to wash down your meals with a glass of refreshing iced Teh Tarik (Indian pulled mik tea) from any of the drinks stall here.
