HDB Experience Not Found in Lonely Planet
The Crawford Center is a public housing estate that is not listed on the usual Lonely Planet guides and definitely worth visiting. The estate is opposite to V Hotel Lavender and right behind the ICA building, via a bridge over the Sungei Rochor canal.
Built in late 1970s, the Crawford housing estate offers the curious travelers a peep into the daily livelihood of Singaporeans. Just take a stroll along the 10 blocks of flats during evening time to see how locals walk their dogs, play with their kids, bantering with neighbors on void decks and exercising in the mini-parks.
Interesting ground floor shops can also be found in select blocks hawking wares and services like Latino dance outfits, delicious Swiss rolls and shepherd’s pies, scuba diving equipment and even a Vietnamese-brides matchmaking agency.
Coaches to Malaysia and Cheap Thai Food
Travelers planning road trips to Malaysia will be glad to know that V Hotel Lavender is just a 15-minute walk to Golden Mile Complex at Beach Road. Over here, cheap coach tickets can be bought for overnight bus-rides to many parts of Malaysia like Kuala Lumpur, Genting, Malacca, Penang, etc.
One very popular day tour is to Johor Premium Outlet, a sprawling factory outlet from Simon Property Group selling marked down pieces from 80 over brands like Armani Exchange, Burberry, Coach, Calvin Klein, Tumi, etc.
The Thai diaspora and well-informed locals also flock to Golden Mile Complex for another reason. That is to satisfy their craving for authentic Thai food. The Thai eateries found here are helmed by real Thai chefs dishing out spicy favorites like Phad Thai and Tom Yum Goong. Good thing is the prices are really affordable that you can have it almost every other day.
Little Arabia In Singapore
As Malays are considered one of the 4 major races in Singapore, it comes with no surprise that there is an area called Kampong Glam that is full of ethnic Malay-Arab vibes, hence the moniker Little Arabia. Also known as Arab Quarters by the locals, it is a 15-minute walk from V Hotel Lavender and landmarked by the iconic Sultan Mosque with a large gold onion-shaped dome.
The 600 over conserved Pre-World War II shop houses here are jammed with indie stores selling local independent fashion labels, old vinyl records, modern bicycles and bespoke leather goods. Ethnic wares like Persian carpets, wicker baskets, Malay arts and crafts, Muslim costumes like Baju Kurung, batik clothes and Arabian perfumes can also be found here.
For food lovers, Arab Quarters offers a bewildering choice from over 50 restaurants and cafes serving Turkish, Iranian, Indonesian and Mediterranean cuisine. Prices are affordable and portions are reasonable too.
Shop Like A Singaporean
Easy access to famous shopping centers is what guests of V Hotel Lavender will enjoy. Singaporeans are famously known to sniff out a bargain from miles away and for the latest in IT electronics and gadgets, their choice destination will be Sim Lim Square.
Sim Lim Square, a 6-storey shopping mall located on corner of Jalan Besar and Rochor Road is a 20-minute stroll from V Hotel Lavender. Over here, you can immerse yourself in the 100 over shops selling the latest models of digital cameras, ultra-thin laptops (Ultrabooks), computer motherboards, graphics cards, printers and game consoles.
Recently, round-the-clock shopping has caught on with locals and tourists alike in Singapore and Mustafa Center is the prime choice – it is the only 24-hour shopping centre in the city state. Mustafa Center with over 150,000 square feet of retail space is located on Syed Alwi Road (Little India), a 15-minute walk from hotel doorstep.
“Whatever you can think of, you probably can find it in Mustafa shopping center and cheap too!” This sentence that came from a passing local aptly describes the scale of competitively priced stuff on sale. You can find clothing, toys, health supplements, gold jewellery, shoes, sports goods, luggage, cosmetics, perfumes, spices, confectionery, digital cameras, laptops, mobile phones, iPhones and iPads accessories, printers, fax machines, LCD TVs and even Swiss watches on sale.
